Abstract Hydrogen bonded adlayers of the bis(terpyridine) derivative 2,4’-BTP on different single crystalline gold and silver surfaces were studied by variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (VT-STM) and Video-STM. The STM data is evaluated quantitatively, mainly by large counting statistics. The results are supported by DFT-D calculations and Monte-Carlo simulations. This work gives insight on the molecular scale on adsorbate-adsorbate interactions, adsorbate-surface interactions, interactions between adsorbates surface defects, surface reactions (reactivity of organic adlayers) and rotations of adsorbates.
